Reading together is the most important thing you can do to prepare your child to read.
The library’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program encourages parents to read with their children with the goal of reading 1,000 books before the first day of kindergarten. If you read just one book a day you can complete this program in 3 years. If you read more than one book a day you’ll finish even sooner. Participation is easy! All you need to do is read together and keep track of the books. Count any book your child listens to in full. Audio books, board books, storytime books, reading a book more than once, and reading in any language all count. To get started:
- Visit the library to receive a booklet to track your reading or print a log from home.
- Return to the library to receive a small prize and the next reading log after each 100 books read.
- When your child completes the program, they will receive a certificate to commemorate their achievement and a new book to keep.
Visit the library’s Youth Department for more information or assistance.
