Read-to-me (Birth – Kindergarten)

These littlies are going to be tracking the number of books they’re read throughout the summer. Being read to is a crucial part of early literacy; reinforcing skills like letter and word identification, phonics and fluency.

  • – Pick up a duckie log and free book in the youth department beginning June 14th.
  • – Color a duck for each book that is read.
  • – Come into the library to collect prizes when you reach those big milestones: 25, 50, 75 and 100 books.
  • – Want to keep reading? This program was designed to be a segway into our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. For more information click the link below or ask a librarian.

Elementary readers are going to be building a reading log necklace this summer. As they accomplish tasks on their reading log, they’ll be collecting specialty beads to add to their necklace and reducing summer slide.

  • – Pick up a reading necklace, a reading log and a free book beginning June 14th .
  • – Complete tasks on the reading log to collect beads for your necklace.
  • – Participants are limited to 2 logs for the length of the summer (more detailed info on the reading log worksheet).
  • – Earn extra beads by participating in special weekly challenges posted in the youth department and attending specific programs.

Tween/Middle School Readers (entering 6th – 8th)

Middle Schoolers will be working through a reading log specially designed to fit the reading habits and interests of this age group. In addition to timed reading, their logs will also have them exploring the library and completing fun book related activities.

  • – Pick up a tween log and free book beginning June 14th.
  • – Complete tasks on the log to earn small prizes, raffle entries and more free books.
  • – Participants are limited to 2 logs for the length of the summer (more detailed info on the reading log worksheet).

Teen (entering 9th – 12th)

Welcome to the new and improved teen summer reading program, Teen Summer Book Boxes.

Summer break shouldn’t be filled with assignments and worksheets. It should be about enjoying your time, discovering new characters, extraordinary worlds, and whirlwind adventures.
So, in that spirit of fun and leisure there are no reading logs, no tracking, and no task lists to check off, just reading for the enjoyment of reading.
In each box you’ll receive:
  • a couple of library books specially selected based on the information submitted in the subscription form
  • a selection of snacks, also based on preferences submitted in the subscription form
  • fun swag like stickers, pen toppers, and fidgets
  • a raffle ticket for the grand prize drawing
  • a shelf-talker book recommendation form – fill it out and submit it for a bonus raffle ticket (totally optional)
  • reading lists to further your exploration into the genre
Submit this form to request a Book Box and let the summer reading begin. A request must be submitted for each box you’d like to receive.
The first boxes will be available June 14th, the official start to the SSLDL Summer Reading Program. Any boxes requested after June 14th will be ready for pick up about a week from the form submission. Notifications will be sent out when boxes are ready for pickup.
